Welcome Note

We are delighted to welcome you to the Website of the Tanzania Institute of Adult Education (IAE) and grateful for your interest in getting to know us better.

IAE has come a long way since its founding in early 1960s when it started as a section under the department of extra- mural studies of Makerere University College under the University of London. Then it became part of the University College of Dar Es Salaam in 1963, having more activities including research, Distance Education and training of adult educators. In 1975, IAE was established as an autonomous institution under the then Ministry of National Education, presently called Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT).

Since its establishment a number of developments have happened. We have gone through various transformations ranging from offering Basic Education to Higher Education  (under NACTE accreditation), from Knowledge Based Education and Training (KBET) orientation to Competence Based Education and Training (CBET) programmes of study, and from fully using print media to relatively electronic technology in offering Open and Distance Learning (ODL) based programmes. These transformations and many other have greatly influenced us to take a new look and improve our institutional website for more improved service delivery to our clients.

In this website you can find the description of IAE structure and the wide range of activities that the institute is engaged and plan to develop, making an effort in doing our best to cover the needs and desires of current and potential learners as well as the general public.

Both if you belong to a higher learning community or you want to visit it and know about our institute’s mandate, these pages will show you the study programmes taught at the IAE and the services offered at its regional centres, as well as its governing organs and management of its regulations and administration.

As adult and continuing education providers we wish the best education for our learners in their respective studies. We wish to help them turn into valuable professionals, able to constitute the backbone of social and economic development. And we believe that surrounding community, associations and companies have useful help from the Institute of Adult Education to achieve their aspirations. Likewise we realize that our institute has a number of challenges in achieving its vision of becoming a centre of excellence that maintains learned and informed society.

We therefore invite you to explore our site and join us in sharing in the challenges and turning them into opportunities for further development of adult and continuing education in the country and across the borders.

Thank you very much,

Institute of Adult Education,
